Question 833420: This is the system of equations problem...
"Laura has $4.50 in dimes and quarters. She has 3 more dimes than quarters. How many quarters does she have?"
I thought of this equation, but it isn't a system and I am not sure it would work either.

Could someone please explain how to solve this system of equations word problem? Thank so much and I really appreciate it.

"Laura has $4.50 in dimes and quarters. She has 3 more dimes than quarters. How many quarters does she have?"
Equations:
Quantity: d = q + 3
Value::: 10d + 25q = 450 cents
--------
Substitute for "d" and solve for "q":
10(q+3) + 25q = 450
10q + 30 + 25q = 450
35q = 420
----------
q = 12 (# of quarters)
----
d = q+3 = 15 (# of dimes)
