Let +b+ = Dan's dad's age now

(1) +b+=+a+%2B+4+
(2) +b+%2B+4+=+3%2A%28+a+%2B+4+%29+

(2) +b+%2B+4+=+3a+%2B+12+
(2) +-3a+%2B+b+=+8+
and
(1) +-a+%2B+b+=+4+
-------------------
Multiply both sides of (1) by +-1+
and add the equations
(2) +-3a+%2B+b+=+8+
(1) ++a+-+b+=+-4+
+-2a+=+4+
+a+=+-2+

This says dan won't be born yet for 2 years
and his father is
(1) +b+=+a+%2B+4+
(1) +b+=+-2+%2B+4+
(1) +b+=+2+
2 years old
