The two boats are separating at the rate of 10 mph +8 mph or 18 mph
Distance(d) equals rate(r) times time(t) or d=rt, so:
54=18t divide both sides by 18
t=3 hrs-----------------answer

In 3 hours boat 1 goes 10*3=30 mi and boat 2 goes 3*8=24 mi
30+24=54
54=54
