add -8 to each side
3x + y = -8
add -3x to each side
y = -3x -8
Use y = mx + b as a template with m = -3 , (4,2) x = 4 and y = 2
2 = (-3)(4) + b
2 = -12 + b
add 12 to each side
14 = b
So the equation is y = -3x + 14
