Let's get rid of them. Multiply each side by 4.
(1/4x - 5) * 4 = 4/4x - 20 = x-20
The other side: (3/4x-12) * 4 = 12/4x - 48 = 3x-48
Now plug those back in.
x-20 = 3x-48
Subtract x from each side
-20 = 2x - 48
Add 48 to each side
28 = 2x
Divide each side by 2
