Question 831416: A rectangle is 5 feet longer than it is wide. The perimeter of the rectangle is 34 feet. What is the length of the rectangle? Answer by jean14(9) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! By the formula of perimeter of rectangle
P= 2(l + w) or 2l + 2w
*P=34feet
let x be the width
x+5 is length (5ft longer than width)
SO , substute in formula;
34ft= 2(x+5+x)
34ft = 2(2x+5)
34ft = 2(4x+10)
34ft-10=4x
24ft=4x divide both by 4 to solve for x
24ft/4 =4x/4
6ft=x
We found the width 6ft .
So the length is;
X+5=6ft+5= 11ft
Now lets substitute to the formula above.
P=2(l +w)
34ft=2(11ft+6ft)
34ft = 2(17ft)
34ft=34ft true
The length is 11ft long. And width 6ft.
