Suppose we are given the area = 221 and the height = 13

We just use the area formula (we don't need another one)

A%22%22=%22%22BH

Replace A by 221 and H by (13)

221%22%22=%22%22B%2813%29

221%22%22=%22%2213B

Then we divide both sides by 13

221%2F13%22%22=%22%2213B%2F13

Cancel the 13's

221%2F13%22%22=%22%22B

We divide 221÷13

    17
13)221
   13
    91
    91
     0

So

17%22%22=%22%228

The base is 17.

Hi, there--

Let A be the area of the rectangle.
Let B be its base.
Let H be the height.

The most common formula for the area of a rectangle is
A+=+B+%2A+H

We can rewrite this in "base equals" form by dividing both sides by H.

A%2FH+=+%28B%2AH%29%2FH

The H is the numerator and denominator on the right side cancel each other because H/H=1.
A%2FH+=+B%2Across+%28H%29%2Fcross+%28H%29
B=A%2FH

In other words, to find the base, divide the area by the height.

Hope this helps,
