You can put this solution on YOUR website! Remember that whatever you do to one side, you can do to the other.
Here's the long way:
2x + 3 + 4 + 8 = 40
Subtract 8 from each side:
2x + 3 + 4 = 40-8 (or 32)
Subtract 4 from each side:
2x + 3 = 32-4 (or 28)
Subtract 3 from each side:
2x = 28-3 (or 25)
Divide each side by 2 to get:
x = 25/2 (or 12 1/2)
Prove it by putting it back into the original equation:
2(12.5) + 3 + 4 + 8 = 40
25 + 3 + 4 + 8 does indeed = 40
