What you're looking for is
x (the cost of the car) * .06 (the sales tax rate) = 1080
Divide each side by .06:
x = 1080/.06
x = 18000
Plug it back in to make sure it's correct.
$18,000 * .06 = $1,080
Total cost of the car = $19,080
