Jocelyn has a jar of 54 coins consisting of dimes and quarters. If she has a total of $9.60, how many dimes does she have?
I have tried to draw it out and set it to 960 but i am just confused
Let number of dimes and quarters be D, and Q, respectively
Then we get the following:
Number-of-coins equation: D + Q = 54 -------- eq (i)
Value-of-all-coins equation: .1D + .25Q = 9.6 ------ eq (ii)
- .25D - .25Q = - 13.5 ------ Multiplying eq (i) by - .25 ---- eq (iii)
- .15D = - 3.9 ------ Adding eqs (iii) & (ii)
D, or number of dimes =

**I don't mind working with decimals at all. But, if you DO NOT like working with decimals, you could
also convert eq (ii) to integers by multiplying entire equation by 20, and then eq (i) by 2, and then
subtract either equation from the other.
You also could've solved eq (i) for either D or Q and substitute that value into eq (ii), and solve for
the variable, D or Q. Then solve for the other variable.
