Let x = 1st number and y = 2nd number.
x-y=45
y=3x-3
plug in the second equation to the first.
therefore,
x-(3x-3)=45
x-3x+3=45
-2x+3=45
3=45+2x
3-45=2x
-42/2=x
-21=x

and
-21-y=45
-21-45=y
-66=y.
