20 + 3/4(12 - y) = 3/2 y - 10
to rid ourselves of the denominators, multiply both sides by 4:
80 + 3(12 - y) = 6y - 40
80 + 36 - 3y = 6y - 40
116 - 3y = 6y - 40
156 - 3y = 6y
156 = 9y
156/9 = y
52/3 = y
