Question 827276: Sevim is buying roses, tulips and carnations to make bouquets. At the wholesale market, roses cost $12 per dozen, tulips cost $14 per dozen, and carnations cost $8 per dozen. Sevim spends $304 and buys 27 dozen flowers. She buys 2 more dozen roses than tulips. How many dozen of each does she buy?
Thank you for your help!!

Answer by josgarithmetic(39617) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
m = amount roses in dozens
n = amount of tulips, dozens
p = amount of carnations, dozens
m=n%2B2 ------ roses amount is two more than tulips amount

Account for the cost:
12m%2B14n%2B8p=304

Account for the amount of flowers, as dozens:
m%2Bn%2Bp=27

You have three equations, linear, in three unknowns. You should begin with using the m=n+2 equation to substitute for m in the two Accounting equations and simplify these. You will then have a system of TWO equations in TWO unknowns, which will be simpler and easier to solve.
