Joe ken and mike are three bicycle riders starting together and traveling around a track that is 1/3 of a mile.
One travels 4mph, one 6mph, and one 8mph.
In how many minutes will they next be together at the starting point for the first time.:
Find the time for JOe to circle the track at 4 mph in minutes. time = dist/speed
%281%2F3%29%2F4 * 60 =
which is
1%2F3*1%2F4*60 = 5 min
:
Find the time for Ken at 6 mph
1%2F3*1%2F6*60 = 31%2F3 min:
:
Mike is twice as fast as Joe, therefore
5%2F2 = 21%2F2 min for Mike
:
Try 30 min for them all to be at the starting point
:
30/5 = 6 times around the track by Joe
30/3.3333 = 9 times by Ken
30/2.5 = 12 times by Mike

They will meet at the starting point at the 1%2F6-hour mark, or highlight_green%2810%29 minutes after they start
Proof
Joe does 1 lap of the track in 1%2F3 ÷ 4, or 1%2F12 hr, or 5 minutes. He will have completed 2 laps in 2(5), or 10 minutes
Ken does 1 lap of the track in 1%2F3 ÷ 6, or 1%2F18 hr, or 10%2F3 minutes. He will have completed 3 laps in 3%2810%2F3%29, or 10 minutes
Mike does 1 lap of the track in 1%2F3 ÷ 8, or 1%2F24 hr, or 5%2F2 minutes. He will have completed 4 laps in 4%285%2F2%29, or 10 minutes
