In an equation such as: y+=+2x+%2B+4 the value of y depends on the value that you assign to x.
Since y depends on x, we call y the dependent variable and x the independent variable.
Whenever the value of one variable depends on the value assigned to another variable, the first variable is known as the dependent variable and the second variable is known as the independent variable.
