No, "It must exceed seven" is "x > 7", or equivalently "7 < x".  In
either case the x has to be on the larger side of the inequality 
symbol and 7 must be on the smaller side in order for
x to exceed 7).  Some people say <  and > look like hungry mouths
who are trying to bite the bigger side.
