You can put this solution on YOUR website! Patty has 20 coins consisting of nickels and dimes.
If her nickels were dimes and her dimes were nickels, her coins would be worth 70 cents more.
How much are her coins worth?
:
n + d = 20
:
"If her nickels were dimes and her dimes were nickels, her coins would be worth 70 cents more."
(.05d + .10n) - (.05n + .10d) = .70
.05d + .10n - .05n - .10d = .70
.10n - .05n +.05d -.10d = .70
.05n - .05d = .70
divide thru by .05, results:
n - d = 14
Use elimination here
n - d = 14
n + d = 20
-------------
2n = 34
n = 34/2
n = 17 nickels
then
20 - 17 = 3 dimes
:
17(.05) + 3(.10) = $1.15, the value of her coins
:
See if that works
1.70 + .15 = 1.85; 17 dimes, 3 nickels
.85 + .30 = 1.15; 17 nickels, 3 dimes
------------------
difference: .70
