Question 821410: i need to have the problem y=-x+3;(-2,-2) and y =-2/3+2;(9,-3) im not sure if i did them right so what im looking for is it written out and with the terms "write the equationof the line parralle to the given line but passing to the given point for the first problem. Then for the second one i need write the equation of a line perpendicular to the given line but passing through the given point

PARALLEL

y = -1 x + 3
Divide by 1
y = -1 x + 3
Compare this equation with y=mx+b
slope m = -1
The slope of a line parallel to the above line will be the same
The slope of the required line will be -1
m= -1 ,point ( -2 , -2 )
Find b by plugging the values of m & the point in
y=mx+b
-2 = 2 + b
b= -4
m= -1
Plug value of the slope and b in y = mx +b
The required equation is y = - x -4

Perpendicular
y = - 2/ 3 x + 2
Compare this equation with y=mx+b, m= slope & b= y intercept
slope m = - 2/3

The slope of a line perpendicular to the above line will be the negative reciprocal 3/2
Because m1*m2 =-1
The slope of the required line will be 3/2

m= 3/2 ,point ( 9 , -3 )
Find b by plugging the values of m & the point in
y=mx+b
-3 = 27/ 2 + b
b= -33/2
m= 3/2
The required equation is y = 3/ 2 x + -33/ 2
