Question 819481: Two cars start from the same point and travel in opposite directions. The car traveling west leaves 1 hr later than the car traveling east. The eastbound car travels 40mph, and the westbound car travels 60mph. When they are 240 miles apart, how long had each car traveled?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
head start:
s = d / t
d = s * t
d = 40 * 1 = 40 miles
---
relative speed: 100 mph
---
when 240 miles apart, the cars have both been moving during only 200 miles of that, due to the head start of the east bounder
t = d / s
t = 200 / 100
t = 1 hour
---
so, when 240 miles apart, the east bound car has been moving for 2 hours and the west bound car for only 1 hour.

r*t=d
40*(t+1)+60t=240
t=2
check
40*3+60*2=240
ok
west bound 2 hours at 60 mph
east bound 3 hours at 40 mph
