You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x=first number
then 3x-1=second number
Now we are told that:
(3x-1)-x=47 get rid of parens
3x-1-x=47 add 1 to both sides
3x-1+1-x=47+1 collect like terms
2x=48 divide both sides by 2
x=24 -------------------------------the first number
3x-1=3(24)-1=72-1=71----------------------------second number
CK
71-24=47
47=47

Hope this helps---ptaylor
