I would say that any equation in which you have the form y=sqrt%28x-1%29 , it IS a function. It's only when you have a "plus or minus" such as y=0%2B-sqrt%28x-1%29+, or an equation in which there is a y that is raised to an EVEN power, that it will NOT be a function.
