The ratio of boys to girls in Ms. Alper’s math classes is 5 ∶ 7. If there are 60 students in all
of her classes, how many are boys?
--------------
5:7 is the same as 5x:7x where # of boys = 5x and # of girls = 7x
------
Equation:
5x + 7x = 60
12x = 60
x = 5
----
# of boys = 5x = 5*5 = 25

ratio of boys to girls is 5:7
60 students, how many boys x
%285%2F7%29+=+x%2F%2860-x%29 | Cross Multiplying to solve
7x = 5(60-x)
12x = 300
x = 25 boys in the class
