Question 812168: I am trying to help my Son with this 3rd Grade problem. Topic: Problem Solving Using Estimation and Extra Information.
Problem: Sam took 3 days to drive from Virginia to Florida. On the first day he drove 325 miles. On the second day he drove 412 miles. Georgia is 700 miles from Virginia. How many miles was it from Virginia to Florida?
My take on the problem: 1) Extra information is the sentence, Georgia is 700 miles from Virginia. I think it is not needed and has no bearing on solving the problem. 2) I think there is not enough information to estimate an answer for the 3 day of travel and total distance.
Please provide your input on how or if this problem can be solved Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Problem: Sam took 3 days to drive from Virginia to Florida.
On the first day he drove 325 miles.
On the second day he drove 412 miles.
Georgia is 700 miles from Virginia.
How many miles was it from Virginia to Florida?
:
Find the average miles driven per day on the first two days: = About 370 mi per day
3 * 370 = about 1100 mi from Va to Fl
