Let +p+ = the original price of the item
given:
+x+-+.4x+=+x+-+32+
+.6x+=+x+-+32+
+.4x+=+32+
+x+=+80+
The original price of the item was $80
check:
$80 minus $32 = $48
$80 minus 40% = $48
