Question 808432: Ben and Jerry want to make some ice cream. Ben can pick the strawberry field by
himself in 8 hours but doesn't show up until an hour after Jerry starts picking.
They both then work and finish picking the field in another two hours. If Ben
had not shown up and Jerry had to instead work by himself, how long would it
have taken him to pick the field?
my work:
using a table...ben's rate = 1/8, his time is 3 hours?,
Jerry's rate is 1/x and his time is 2 hours? (working together)
help!

You can put this solution on YOUR website! You have the hours backwards.
Jerry worked 3 hours and Ben 2 hours
Ben showed up late after Jerry had started
Ben worked for 2 hours at the rate of 1/8 each hour
2/8=1/4
so Ben did 1/4 of the job in 2 hours and Jerry did 3/4 of the job in 3 hours.
He did 1/4 of the job each hour
2/j+2/b=1-1/j
3/j+2/8=1
3/j=3/4
j=4 hours alone
