I like using the first letter of the word because its easier to know what I'm calculating. Its a personal preference do as you please.
n=nickels which are 0.05 of a dollar
d=dimes which are 0.1 of a dollar id multiply by ten so i can use the subtraction method subtract the top equation with this one the d's cancel then solve for n add like terms divide by .5 or multiply by 2 solve for d
So 12 dimes and 15 nickels
Or
x=15 and y=12
