Question 8028: I am having a hard time solving this word problem. My old brain isn't as young as it was. Please help:
A truck, its driver and its load weight 43,320 pounds. The truck weighs 230 times the weight of the driver and the load is 30 pounds more than three times the driver’s weight. What is the weight of the load? I need help developing the linear equation and solving it.
Please - I am pressed for time.

Let's use T for the weight of the truck, D for the weight of the driver, and L for the weight of the load.
The first fact says +T%2BD%2BL=43320, right?
The second fact says T+=+230D
The third fact says L=3D%2B30
The last two facts can be used to solve the first equation:
230D+%2B+D+%2B+3D+%2B+30+=+43320 [replaceing T and L with their equals]
234D+=+43290 [adding up the D's and subtracting 30 from both sides]
D+=+185 [dividing both sides by 234]
Now we can put this value for D in the last equation:
L=3%28185%29%2B30=585
Can you find the weight of the truck (T)? Does it equal 230(185)?
