Question 800817: the perimeter of a rectangle is 100ft its length is five more than twice the width find the dimensions of the rectangle. i know you have to set up two equations and substitute or eliminate but i don't know how to start

Answer by algebrahouse.com(1659) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
w = width
2w + 5 = length {length is 5 more than twice width}

Perimeter of a rectangle is 2(width) + 2(length)

2w + 2(2w + 5) = 100 {substituted width and length into perimeter formula}
2w + 4w + 10 = 100 {used distributive property}
6w + 10 = 100 {combined like terms}
6w = 90 {subtracted 10 from each side}
w = 15 {divided each side by 6}
2w + 5 = 35 {substituted 15, in for w, into 2w + 5}

width is 15 ft
length is 35 ft
