Question 800556: How would I set this question up?
A collection of 5 cent and 23 cent stapms has a value of $4340. The number of 5 cent stamps is two more thatn four times the number of 23 cent stamps. Find the number of each stamp type.
Express in terms of X. #5 cent stamps__________ #23Cent stamps________
I think it's x+2x+4.
I'm not sure how to solve this equation. Answer by rothauserc(4718) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! let x be the number of 5 cent stamps and y be the number of 23 cent stamps, then
x = 4y+2
so x is the number of 5 cent stamps and (x-2)/4 is the number of 23 cent stamps
we also know that
.05x +.23y = 4340
is $4340 correct????????????????????? ***** corrected value $4.40
now we can substitute for x
.05*(4y+2) +.23y = 4.40
.2y +.1 +.23y = 4.40
subtract .10 from both sides of =
.43y = 4.30
y = 10
x = 4 *10 + 2
x = 42
