Question 798983: Hello
I have worked this problem, but I don't think I am doing it right.
At the end of the day, a storekeeper had $1664 in the cash register, including both the sale of goods and the sales tax of 4%. What amount of sales tax had been collected?
I did
1664 X .04=66.56
I was told I got it wrong though. Thanks for your help in advance.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
At the end of the day, a storekeeper had $1664 in the cash register, including both the sale of goods and the sales tax of 4%.
What amount of sales tax had been collected?
:
It is wrong because the $1664 includes the 4% sales tax
:
Change 4% to decimal form; .04
:
Find the sale of goods (g):
1.04g = 1664
g = 1664/1.04
g = $1600 for the goods
therefore
.04*1600 = $64 is the sales tax
:
:
Goods + tax = 1664, right?
