SOLUTION: Solve for x. 1000 = x + 1/5x. I have tried deducting 20% from 1000 but the math doesn't work out. 1000-200=800. But 20% of 800 = 160 and 800+160=960. In other words if 1000 is say

In other words if 1000 is say a total that includes a 20% tip, what is the break down of the total prior to the tip and the tip itself? Answer by DrBeeee(684) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Given:
(1) x + x/5 = 1000
Just add the like terms on the left side of (1) to get
(2) x + 0.2*x = 1000 or
(3) (1 + 0.2)*x = 1000 or
(4) 1.2*x = 1000 or
(5) x = 1000/1.2 or
(6) x = 833.333... or
(7) x = 2500/3
Check with (1).
Is (2500/3 + (1/5)*(2500/3) = 1000)?
Is (2500/3 + 2500/15 = 1000)?
Is (2500*(1/3 + 1/15) = 1000)?
Is (2500*(6/15) = 1000)?
Is (15000/15 = 1000)?
Is (1000 = 1000)? Yes
Answer: x = 2500/3
