By Theorem of Pythagoras,
x%5E2+%2B+x%5E2+=+8%5E2
2x%5E2+=+64
x%5E2+=+32

As good fortune would have it, x%5E2+ also just happens to be the area of the square. Therefore, the area of the square is 32 square centimeters.
