Question 793308: One side of a right triangle is 12 cm long. The hypotenuse is 3 cm more than twice as long as the other side. What are the dimensions of the triangle ? Answer by Cromlix(4381) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! One side = 12
Other side = x
Hypotenuse = 2x + 3
12^2 + x^2 = (2x + 3)^2
144 + x^2 = 4x^2 + 12x + 9
Collect like terms:
3x^2 + 12x - 135 = 0
Divide thro'out by 3
x^2 + 4x - 45 = 0
(x + 9)(x - 5) = 0
x + 9 = 0
x = -9 (no answer as x < 0)
x - 5 = 0
x = 5
Dimensions of triangle:
One side = 12 cm
Other side = 5 cm
Hypotenuse = 13 cm.
Hope this helps.
