Question 793134: I've sat here and tried this problem so much and I cannot figure out how to set the equation up. If you could help me, it would mean so much to me, thank you!
There are 22 more sophomores than juniors in an 8AM algebra class. If there are 46 students in this class, find the number of sophomores and the number of juniors in the class.

Again, thank you so much.<3

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let s = no. sophomores
let j = no.of Juniors
:
Write an equation for each statements:
"There are 22 more sophomores than juniors in an 8AM algebra class."
s = j + 22
"If there are 46 students in this class,"
j + s = 46
From the 1st equation, replace s with (j+22)
j + (j+22) = 46
2j + 22 = 46
2j = 46 - 22
2j = 24
j = 24/2
j = 12 juniors
then
s = 12 + 22
s = 34 Sophomores
:
Check this: 12 + 34 = 46
