The formula is:

 Distance on earth in 1st situation       Distance on earth in 2nd situation 
------------------------------------  =  ------------------------------------
  Distance on map in 1st situation         Distance on map in 2nd situation

So:

    1050 miles on earth      X miles on earth
   --------------------- = -------------------
     42 inches on map        92 inches on map

Or eliminating the words:


          1050      X
         ------ = ----
           42      92

Cross-multiply:

            42X = (92)(1050)
            42X = 96600
              X = 96600 ÷ 42
              X = 2300

So it's 2300 miles on earth between Seattle WA and Cincinatti OH
