Question 791834: Prompt: In 1950, a city was first established containing 32,000 people. In the year 2000, the size of the city was 149,000 people.
Question A: determine the rate of change in the population.
Question B: Predict the size of the city in the year 2010.
My issue is that I don't understand how to do this problem. I thought it was 'y' over 'x' and this is what I got so far: 32000 divided by 1950 and 149000 divided by 2000 but I don't think is the right way to solve the issue. Please help me.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
lets put population on the y axis and year on the x axis... and find the slope which is m
.......y2 - y1
m =--------
.......x2 - x1
these are our two points
(1950,32000) and
(2000,149000)
.
.
149,000 - 32,000
-----------------
2000 - 1950
.
.
equals
.
.
117,000
---------
50
.
.
reduce to lowest terms...
.
.
2340
----
1
.
.
so for every year, the population increases by 2340 people. to estimate the population for the year 2010, multiply 2340 by 10 = 23,400, add that to 149,000 to get an estimated population of 172,400 in the year 2010
