Question 789983: Having trouble with this concept.Category is "replacement sets" the question posed is- b-(-3b-3)=4b+3.the correct set is 2.....but then the confusion with me is-again-2-(-6-3) which is-2-(-9)=11? the other side of equation is ok(11 of course).Is it because the 2 negative signs(one inside parenthesis)and the positive 2 in front makes the 9 positive???? One final question-any number inside absolute value sign will become positive-if the number is negative....but positive number cannot become negative?

No.

But ,

So what is the problem here? Either 2 is NOT the correct replacement set, or that minus sign you have in front of the 2 in the LHS of your equation is spurious.

If the problem is

Then

And that is true no matter what value you substitute for , so 2 would work just fine as in:

But it would work just as well if

But if the problem is

Then

Which is only true if

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
b-%28-3b-3%29=4b%2B3...we can prove that left side is equal to right side
b%2B3b%2B3=4b%2B3
4b%2B3=4b%2B3...proof

2-%28-9%29=11
2%2B9=11
11=11
as you said, the other side of equation is ok(11 of course).Is it because the 2 negative signs(one inside parenthesis)and the positive 2 in front makes the 9 positive--this is correct
now, your question: any number inside absolute value sign will become positive-if the number is negative
that is true; recall definition of absolute value
the absolute value of a number is the distance the number is from zero (on a number line}}}
example:
abs%28-3%29=3, on number line -3 is 3 units to the left from zero
abs%283%29=3, on number line 3 is 3 units to the right from zero
