Question 78951: Can someone please help me with this? I have started back to school after a 30 year absence and I'm lost. I have no prior knowledge of algebra and now I'm "required" take the class. Help!!!!! I believe this stuff is supposed to be answered with the x,y, etc. stuff. How I don't know!! Here is the Problem:
It is approximately 480 miles from Los Angeles, California, to San Francisco, California. Allowing for various traffic conditions, a driver can average approximately 60 miles per hour.
a) How far have you traveled after 3 hours?

I have edited your question to take out some aspects I did not like about it.
Please do not post numerous questions as one question.
Also, I do not want to answer a question that tells me "Answer" and "Show your work". In a tutoring site I help to teach someone to do something, not do homework so someone can pass a "required" class. It is required because it is good if people can understand things. Please pay attention to the answer and try to actually learn what is going on. I am sure locating the answer will be the least of your problems. Just because you are instructed to show your work does not mean I am going to appreciate being told to show my work. As a true believer in math I am probably going to show you more work than you need in my explanation. Is this clear??!!

OK the formula you might want to have here is:
Distance and Speed formula
d = s * t
The distance traveled is the average speed multiplied by the amount of time traveled.
The formula assumes a constant speed. The question seems to be following some idealized view of reality where an 'average' speed can be used as a constant speed. Therefore the answer you are about to get is not going to have a very exact relationship to reality. In reality you might drive at a very nearly constant speed of 60 miles an hour for 20 minutes on cruise control, except there would be slight hills and breezes and other natural variations. To exactly represent the distance traveled would require calculus and integrals.
So your answer is going to involve the word 'Approximately' is what I am getting to here. Sorry for lecturing
Anyway, your t is 3 hours, your s is about 60 miles per hour, and if you use the formula
d = t * s
that is
d = 3 * 60
d = 180 miles
Answer: you traveled about 180 miles
