By the segment addition postulate, we know that AB+BD = AD and AC+CD = AD
So AB+BD=AC+CD turns into AD = AD. You can take this in reverse to start with AD = AD (true by the reflexive property) and arrive at AB+BD=AC+CD (using the segment addition postulate twice)
