Divide the descent into two parts. 1st part: From 533 feet to sea level. 2nd part from sea level to 10 feet below sea level. Add the distance for each of the two parts. Hint: How many feet above or below sea level is sea level?

10 ft below sea level corresponds to the number -10

Distance from 533 to -10 is: 533 - (-10) = 533 + 10 = 543

So the climber descended 543 feet.
