Question 782276: Chris is 5 years older than jacob. Four years from now chris will be twice as old as jacob. How old is chris now?
Answer by algebrahouse.com(1659) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x = Jacob's age now
x + 5 = Chris' age now

x + 4 = Jacob's age in 4 years
x + 9 = Chris' age in 4 years {added 4 onto current age}

x + 9 = 2(x + 4) {in 4 years, Chris will be twice as old as Jacob}
x + 9 = 2x + 8 {used distributive property}
9 = x + 8 {subtracted x from each side}
x = 1 {subtracted 8 from each side}
x + 5 = 6 {substituted 1, in for x, into x + 5}

Chris is 6 now
