Question 780921: y=1/4x-2; (8,-1)
y=-4x-5; (0,-1)
I am trying to understand these and write them out. However, the examples given are really no help to me and I keep coming up with different answers each time I work the problems. I am just getting back into school after 19 years. confused?

You can put this solution on YOUR website! What you have is two linear ( straight line ) equations
A linear equation is also called a first order equation.
--------------------
The order of an equation is the highest power of
You can think of these as:
(1)
(2)
As you can see, the order is
-------------------
Straight lines stretch out to infinity in 2 directions, so
if you are given any value, you can find an
I you are given any , you can find a
--------------------
I'm not sure what you're supposed to do with the given points.
(8,-1) is not on the line
---------------------
You can plot a a point, though, and you can plot the lines.
Also, ( 0,-1) is not on the line
----------------------
Here is a plot of both lines:

The lines intersect at right angles. This is because the
slopes of the lines are negative reciprocals of eachother.
The slopes are:
and

If the form of the equation is , then
is the slope
Hope this helps
