(a) Find an equation that expresses the relationship between the number of students who actually enroll (y) and the number of students who are offered admission to the university (x).
y = 0.65x

(b) If the desired freshman class size for the upcoming academic year is 1300 students, how many students should be admitted?
1300 = 0.65x
x = 1300/0.65 = 2000

Part (b): That depends on what you mean by the word "admitted". To me that means students who actually walk through the front door and are enrolled. Clearly, if you want 1300 freshmen, then you have to admit and enroll 1300. On the other hand, if what you mean by "admitted" is "offered admission" then you need to solve:

Precise language is essential to the study of mathematics. If you repeated the question verbatim from what was provided by your instructor, then I would take your teacher/instructor/professor/whatever to task for being imprecise in a setting that cannot tolerate such looseness.
