the ratio of the cost of a shirt to the cost of a jacket is 2:5. if the jacket cost $240 more than the shirt, find the cost of the shirt and the cost of the jacket.

Let +c+ = the cost of the shirt
+c+%2B+240+ = the cost of the jacket

Now I can say:

Multiply both sides by +5%2A%28+c+%2B+240+%29+
+2%2A%28+c+%2B+240+%29+=+5c+
+2c+%2B+480+=+5c+
+3c+=+480+
+c+=+160+
+c+%2B+240+=+400+
The shirt costs $160
The jacket costs $400
