Use the pythagorean theorem

a^2 + b^2 = c^2

15^2 + 8^2 = c^2

225 + 64 = c^2

289 = c^2

c^2 = 289

c = sqrt(289)

c = 17

So you are 17 miles from the starting point.

The total distance = sqrt%288%5E2%2B15%5E2%29=sqrt%2864%2B225%29=sqrt%28289%29=17.

So you are 17 miles far from the starting point.
