Question 77777: My equation is 5x+8+3x-x+5=6x-3 I have gotten the answer which is -16 and checked it on the equation solver. What I do not understand is why I am not coming out with the correct answer when I check the problem by replacing x with -16? Can someone help me with checking the work?
I have 5(-16)+8+3(-16)-16+5=6(-16)-3 but it is not coming out equal on both sides. Found 2 solutions by bucky, jim_thompson5910:Answer by bucky(2189) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Your answer of x = -16 is correct.
.
Your "check" is:
.
5(-16) + 8 + 3(-16) -16 + 5 = 6(-16) - 3
.
The first three terms [5(-16) + 8 + 3(-16)] are correct. The next term should be -(-16) = +16
not -16. All the rest is OK.
.
Your check should further simplify to:
.
-80 + 8 - 48 + 16 + 5 = -96 - 3
.
and if you add the terms on each side you get - 99 = - 99
.
Hope this eases your mind. Just a minor error.
You can put this solution on YOUR website! The answer of x=-16 is right but your check has a flaw. Your check says
Notice I've highlighted -16
when it should be
Notice I changed the -16 on the left to +16 so we get. The reason why is we have x=-16 and we plug it into
we get
Since we have it becomes
So our check comes to:
And that verifies our answer.
