Question 776865: The question asks to solve the problem using the square root method: (x-1)^2=16
I have already attempted to solve for it but I did it two ways and would like to know if they are correct since I get two different answers.
(x-1)^2=16
Sq.rt(x-1)^2=+/-sq.rt 16
x-1=+ or - 4
x=+/-5
and this is the second way I tried to solve it
x^2-1=16
Sq.rt x^2=Sq.rt17
x=+/-sq.rt 17 Found 2 solutions by rothauserc, MathTherapy:Answer by rothauserc(4718) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! the square root method says take the square root of both sides of the = sign
(x-1)^2=16
CASE 1
x-1 = 4
x = 5
now check the answer
(5-1)^2 = 16
4^2 = 16
16 = 16
CASE 2
x-1 = -4
x = -3
now check answer
(-3-1)^2 = 16
-4^2 = 16
16 = 16
