You can put this solution on YOUR website!
With a strong head wind behind it, a jet flies 2400 miles from LA to Orlando in 4 hours and 45 min. The return trip takes 6 hours as the plane flies into the wind. Find the speed of the plane in still air and the wind speed to the nearest tenth of a mile per hour.
---------
To Orlando DATA:
distance=2400 mi ; time 4.75 hrs ; rate=2400/4.75=505.26 mph
----------
To LA DATA:
distance = 2400 mi; time = 6 hrs ; rate = 2400/6=400 mph
--------
Let p be speed of plane; Let w be speed of wind.
P+w=505.25 mph
p-w=400
Add to get:
2p=905.25
p=452.625 mph (speed of plane in still air)
w=p-400= 52.625 mph (speed of the wind)
