You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Sixteen men complete a work in 24 days
4 men will take 4 times as long, or 96 days
12 men will take 1/3 of this time, or 32 days
In 14 days, the 12 men will complete
+14%2F32+=+7%2F16+ of the job
--------------------------
There is +1+-+7%2F16+=+9%2F16+ of the job
left to do
The children join them. Add their rates of
working to find time +t+ in days to do
+9%2F16+ of the job
--------------------
48 children can do it in 16 days
12 children will take 4 times as long, or 64 days
--------------------
12 men take 32 days to complete job
--------------------
children's rate:
( 1 job ) / ( 64 days )
men's rate:
( 1 job ) / ( 32 days )
------------------
+1%2F64+%2B+1%2F32+=+%28+9%2F16%29+%2F+t+
Multiply both sids by +64+
+1+%2B+2=+%28+4%2A9%29+%2F+t+
+3+=+36%2Ft+
+t+=+12+
Working together, will complete the remaining work in 12 more days
----------------------------
check:
The 12 men worked a total of +14+%2B+12+=+26+ days
They finish +26%2F32+=+13%2F16+ of the job in this time
---------------
The 12 children worked for 12 days
they finish +12%2F64+=+3%2F16+ of the job
+13%2F16+%2B+3%2F16+=+1+ which is 1 job

We must infer that "all of them", 12 men plus 12 children.

one-man rate is 1%2F%2816%2A24%29 job per day.
one-child rate is 1%2F%2848%2A16%29 job per day.

Fundamentally, rate*time=jobs, and if job is time split into two parts, then rate1%2Atime1%2Brate2%2Atime2=SumOfJobParts. Agents working at the same time contribute to work rate by simple addition.

The job actually accomplished was done like this:
Let d = Number of days that the 12 children helped in the job.
highlight%2812%281%2F%2816%2A24%29%2914%2B12%281%2F%2848%2A16%29%29%2Ad=1%29
Finding this equation was the important part.

SOLVE FOR d.
