Question 774431: You have a contract with Bess Truman High School to replace the tile in a 20ftx40ft classroom. The school has 14 boxes of tile. The tile that is being used costs $33.75 per box. Each box covers 45 square feet.
allowing for a total waste of 10%, how much tile is needed?
How much will it cost?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

If there is 10% waste, each box that would cover 45 square feet will only cover 45 minus 4.5 = 40.5 square feet. Divide the area to be covered by 40.5 then round up to get the total number of boxes required (you have to round up because you can't buy a partial box of tile). Subtract the 14 boxes the school already has, and multiply the difference times 33.75. That is, unless you are unable to find the same lot number tile at the tile vendor, in which case the cost will be the total number of boxes required times 33.75 less whatever credit the vendor will give you for the existing 14 boxes of tile you cannot match exactly.
